Session 1: Interventional radiology

Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical specialization that uses medical imaging to perform a variety of minimally invasive techniques. IR performs both diagnosis and therapy procedures through very keyhole surgery or bodily orifices. To aid in the diagnosis or direct future medical treatment, diagnostic IR methods include image-guided biopsy of cancer cells and injection of an image contrast agent into a high porosity, such as a blood vein or a duct. The key benefits of interventional radiology techniques are their ability to reach deep body structures throughout a body orifice or tiny incision using small needles and wires. Real-time visual representation also allows for precise guidance to the abnormality, improving procedure or diagnosis accuracy. These advantages are compensated by the additional risks of not having immediate access to internal structures, as well as the risks of exposure to radiation, such as eye problems and cancer.
