Abstract
Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X=F,Cl, Br andI) and their composites have been successfully synthesizedusingdifferent leaf extracts.Leaf extractis known to possess anti-oxidant and stabilizing propertiesthataids in the immediate reduction and stabilization of the metal ions into their corresponding nanostructures. To obtain a better understanding oftheresults, theBiOXand their composites were also synthesizedby hydrolysis method(withoutleaf extract). The synthesized photocatalyst was characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-visDRS etc.A comparative study was envisaged between bothBiOXand its composites towards the degradation of organic pollutants. The results revealed thatleaf extractmediated BiOXand its compositesled tomuchhigher degradation of organic pollutants as compared to thewithoutleaf extractsynthesized BiOX photocatalysts under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to therole ofleaf extractthat added some additional features toBiOXand their compositessuch assmaller size, mesoporous structure with higher surface area, lower band gap and effective separation of electron-hole pairs.
