Biography:
Dr Mary Sukumar MD is an obstetric anesthesiologist, having completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. With more than 18 years of work experience in India and Bahrain, she is currently in the United Arab Emirates. She is passionate about inter professional education, team work, healthcare quality and patient safety. With a certification in Health Professions Education from the University of Connecticut, and a Certificate in Simulation Instruction, from PennState University, she brings her interest in art and creativity into education, to make the process of learning, memorable and relevant. She is the founder of the social media advocacy groups - Partners in Healthcare Sustainability and Doctors for Sustainability, raising awareness in sustainability issues, warranting attention. She is presently completing an MBA in Healthcare Management from Geneva Business School.
The effect of the environment on health has been well researched and documented and much is known about what preventative methods are required to maintain good health. Ensuring sustainability of the environment, reducing pollution and being responsible with waste management requires raising awareness among healthcare providers as well as in the community. The increasing use of healthcare simulation in the training of students as well as healthcare professionals, globally, places simulation instructors in positions of influential leadership. Thus in the realm of sustainability, simulation educators are in a position of advantage, with the ability to play a major role in contributing to better community health. Additionally, management buy in requires following policies and presenting projects in ways that make sense. This is a report of the initiation of such a project which wowed stakeholders enough for them to pay attention.
