Abstract:
Purpose:To evaluate the surgical and cosmetic outcome using a silicone Foley catheter as a tissue expander device after removal of malignant tumors of the upper and lower eyelids.
Methods:Prospective, non comparative, interventional study in15 patients over a period of 18 months. 10-French silicon Foley catheter was inserted in the zygomaticotemporal region lateral to lateral canthus. Temporary tissue expansion with balloon filled with 10 ml normal saline for six days. On seventh day balloon was deflated and a Tenzel rotational flap was performed
Results:12 patients had a 60 -70 % lower eyelid and 40-50% upper lid created defect.Central palpebral fissure 8±1.5mm in 1st wk and 14±1.25 mm end 2nd wk.
Conclusion:Novel surgical approach utilizing a 10-French Foley catheter as a tissue expander. Temporary Tissue expansion allow easy closure of large eyelid defects wth less stress on suture line. . Excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes. It is cost effective and readily available.
