Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. Madrid is located just northeast of the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula, in the middle of the Spanish central Castilian plateau at an average altitude of 650m. Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. As an industrial centre Madrid retains its advantages in infrastructure, as a transport hub, and as the location of headquarters of many companies.

Madrid is a city so full of life and culture that it’s hard to do justice to it in a few paragraphs. Artistically the city holds its own against any in Europe, with the of the best art museums on the continent where renaissance masterworks and seminal 20th-century pieces are waiting to captivate you.  Many of the historic buildings of Madrid date from the Spanish Golden Age, which coincided with the Habsburgs reign (1516–1700). Philip II moved his court to Madrid in 1561 and transformed the town into a capital city. These reforms were embodied in the Plaza Mayor, characterised by its symmetry and austerity, as well as the new Alcázar, which would become the second most impressive royal palace of the kingdom.
