Biography:

Maxwell M. Chait completed his M.D. degree at the age of 25 from the University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco. He is a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is a practicing gastroenterologist in the faculty of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has authored more than 40 publications in reputed journals. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Liver Disease and Transplantation and serves on the editorial board of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Abstract

Extraordinary advances in hepatology have occurred that impact the diagnosis and treatment of liver disease. Effective therapies for hepatitis B and C have been developed and continue to be refined. The treatment of hepatitis B infection is more complex as more therapeutic options become available. Hepatitis C therapy continues to evolve with remarkable success. Alcoholic liver disease remains a significant health problem and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly becoming a health problem of epidemic proportions. Approaches have been developed to manage the complications of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver transplantation has evolved from an experimental life-saving procedure to a standard therapy for end-stage liver disease.
