Session 1. Interventional Cardiology

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, killing 17.5 million people a year, expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030, according to the WHO. In 2014, heart disease amounted to 30 percent of deaths in the UAE, a survey commissioned by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in partnership with the Dubai Statistics Centre, revealed earlier this year.

Session 2. Cardiovascular Medicine

Efforts to unravel the biological complexity of in vivo cardiogenesis have identified a family of closely related multipotent cardiac progenitor cells. These progenitors must respond to non–cell-autonomous signaling cues to expand, differentiate, and ultimately integrate into the three-dimensional heart structures. Coupling tissue-engineering technologies with patient-specific cardiac progenitor biology holds great promise for the development of human cell models of human disease and may lay the foundation for novel approaches in regenerative cardiovascular medicine.

In a relatively short span, technological developments in cardiovascular imaging have infiltrated every aspect of practice, with noticeable improvements in diagnosis and impact on patient management. All imaging technologies have undergone continual improvements since their inception to a point that imaging has become essential in both clinical practice and research. This article provides a glimpse into the future of cardiovascular imaging and highlights areas of imaging that still need improvement, with a view towards improving the practice of healthcare, where efficiency and value are becoming ever more dominant criteria throughout the continuum of care.

Session 8. Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases

The consumption of fish and fish-derived products is recommended as a means of preventing cardiovascular and other diseases and has considerably increased over recent decades. However, as the world's wild fish stocks are limited, consumers are now being proposed farmed fish as an alternative. The aim of this study was to compare the fat composition of farmed and wild fish in order to estimate whether the expected health effects of the former (especially in relation to cardiovascular diseases) are potentially the same as those of the latter.

Session 10. Exercise benefits in Cardiovascular Disease

People with heart problems should always check with their doctor or heart specialist before starting any exercise programme. Most people can take regular exercise at a level that benefits them. To start with this may mean a daily five-minute walk and then building it up by five minutes each week. Aerobic activity uses your heart and lungs for a long period of time. It also helps your heart use oxygen better and improves blood flow. You want to make your heart work a little harder every time, but not too hard.

Session 11. Live to support Cardiac Devices

Cardiac implantable electrical devices (CIEDs) are extremely sophisticated modern devices that provide patients with many beneficial effects, including increased survival and enhanced quality of life. CIEDs, however, may complicate and unnecessarily prolong the process of dying from terminal illnesses. A rational plan for CIED deactivation near the end of life should, therefore, be carefully drawn up well in advance by the patient in concert with loved ones and treating physicians.

Interventional cardiology deals with the treatment of heart-related diseases such as coronary artery disease, the congenital heart defect, and aneurysm through catheter-based devices. The process involves the insertion of the catheter into a large peripheral artery or vein to perform the surgical process. Interventional cardiology provides fast recovery, controlled bleeding, and short hospital stay. The interventional cardiology market has witnessed constant development from bare metal stent to bio-absorbable stent. Intervention cardiology devices include stents, catheters, guide wires, filters, and balloons. According to Center of Disease Control and Prevention, in 2016 approximately 40,000 children are suffering from coronary heart disease in the U.S. The market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.7% during the forecast period of 2018 to 2025. The procedure involves the insertion of a device (maybe a catheter, balloon, stent, or other devices) into the femoral artery or any large peripheral artery or vein, and cannulating the heart under X-ray visualization (commonly known as fluoroscopy).

Over the past decade, governments of various countries, especially emerging economies, have increased their expenditure on developing their healthcare infrastructure. Thus, the increase in public and private expenditure to develop the health infrastructure in these regions will further boost the adoption of interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular devices in developing countries.

Pediatric interventional cardiology market is expected to witness a lucrative growth in the forecast period owing to the ongoing development of novel minimally invasive devices and the growing population base of pediatric patients. The product portfolio for the pediatric interventional cardiology market consists of ASD, VSD, PFO, PDA & LAA closure devices, catheters, guide wires, transcatheter pulmonary & aortic valves and balloons or stents for angioplasty.

Due to the increasing incidences of congenital cardiac structural defects, it is expected that the heart defect closure devices segment will witness a substantial growth in demand through to 2020.

Why Japan?

Japanese people have the longest life expectancy in the world. Over the past 50 years, the percentage of the population that is elderly has increased 4-fold, from 5.7% in 1960 to 23.1% in 2010. This rate of change is the fastest worldwide. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 25.5% of deaths in the Japanese population, as determined by the survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare Health statistics in 2010. A nationwide database is required to better prevent the onset and progression of CVD. Comprehensive information from Japan, with its rapidly aging population, will be crucial for developing future perspectives in other countries. According to the currently available data in Japan, the quality of acute care is good for stroke but not for heart attack Japan has been successful at reducing the mortality due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) but there is room to reduce the burden of CVD and diabetes even more.
